Literature search tips are summarised on a separate page.
Subject-specific
The most important literature databases for biologists are the Web of Science / Science Citation Index Expanded and PubMed. It may also be worth searching Biosis Previews and CAS SciFinder Discovery Platform. In addition to these literature databases, the database information system also lists fact databases such as the NCBI databases.
The Science Citation Index offers purely topic-based or article searches as well as the option to search the reference lists of publications containing related articles. You can create lists of articles cited in a specific publication (retrospective) and lists of articles in which the publication is cited (prospective). You can also view articles that cite one or more of the references cited in the relevant publication.
An electronic tutorial on using PubMed is provided here.
